Unprecedented growth in logistics sector raises hopes for tech workforce

Booming logistics sector raises hopes for tech workforce

The e-commerce boom, grant of infrastructure status, the digital revolution and unprecedented growth of mobile phone ownership in India have collectively given a strong push to the logistics industry in India. Additionally, automation and implementation of new-age technology such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and analytics have also played a vital role in the massive transformation of the sector.

The unprecedented growth in the logistics industry has fuelled the demand for skilled labour such as vehicle drivers, device operators, back-end customer service providers, programmers, machine engineers, optimised route developers etc. The arrival of tech-focused logistics start-ups have created job opportunities for trained data analysts, Artificial Intelligence, Internet of Things (IoT) and fleet optimisation.

“Implementation of latest innovations-such as Google’s self-driving lockers or partially automated truck convoys used by some Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) at a smaller scale has also created plenty of employment opportunities in the industry for those who are skilled to perform technology-related work,” says Chander Agarwal, managing director, TCIEXPRESS.

“Start-ups are driving new business models and adding much-needed dynamism to the highly orthodox industry. The market expands across tier-II and III cities, especially from trade centres such as Coimbatore, Guwahati, Jaipur, Lucknow and Ludhiana. With the inclusion of AI and other technologies, the efficiency of the entire industry is expected to grow and would lead to a 10% decrease in indirect costs, leading to a growth of 5-8% in exports,” he adds.

“The growth of the logistics sector is all the more important because it has not only been a service, revenue-centric growth but has also resulted in a simultaneous growth in employment, leading many experts to even claim that it can be the largest job creator by 2022. The talent pool of the industry is growing and enterprises should look for aggressive expansion to prepare for the great demand that lies ahead,” Agarwal adds.

“Tech-led start-ups are also changing the perspective of the industry as a whole, and skilled professionals are creating different roles in the sector and bringing quality talent to improve the overall potential. Logistics has level playing field remuneration. Large companies provide excellent long term, full-time employment, with best in salary increase percentage and job title growth,” Agarwal concludes.
