Ad hoc college teachers urge higher education minister not to terminate them

Ad hoc teachers, who are working in government degree, autonomous, model degree and junior colleges across the state, have urged the higher education minister Arun Kumar Sahoo not to terminate them from the service and regularize their job.

Recently, the higher education department had issued an office order to terminate the service of these teachers on May 31, 2020. Around 187 teachers have been working since June 2014. The teachers had also stated that they cannot take part in the selection process for the post of 606-degree college teachers due to the age limit.

Though the higher education department on October 24 has decided to increase the upper age limit from 33 years to 48 years for recruitment of 606 teachers in government degree colleges, they are not happy with the department for not giving weightage to their service since 2014.

In the memorandum to the minister, the ad hoc teachers said the government had adopted UGC guidelines and the principle followed by the Delhi University for selection and appointment of ad hoc lecturers. They were selected through a proper procedure. Most of them have completed their Ph.D. and postdoctoral degrees from national institutes like IIT, JNU and Delhi University and foreign universities.

“We have seen that the state government has earlier regularized services of different contractual employees. Our teachers are good enough and have teaching experience, so the government should allow us to continue,” said an ad hoc teacher.

The government has started the process to recruit 606-degree college teachers through Odisha Public Service Commission (OPSC). “Our case needs to be considered separately. We have helped the state government during the crisis of teachers in the colleges. Now the state should show some kindness towards us,” said the teacher.
