It would be detrimental to the aim of improving higher education if the State and Central government shut down engineering colleges, according to G. Viswanathan, founder-chancellor of Vellore Institute of Technology.
The government should help colleges like it does sick industries as colleges have tremendous potential to propel the growth of the country.
Engineering syllabus should be updated on a par with developed nations and bring together industry and institutions, he felt.

At the inauguration of the Ninth World Engineering Education Forum here on Thursday, Mr. Viswanathan said the country aimed to increase the gross enrolment ratio in higher education from 26% to 50%. The All India Council for Technical Education wanted to close down 800 colleges.
As many as 24 countries required software engineers and the Ministries of External Affairs and Human Resource Development should work in tandem with the State governments to train students and send them abroad, he suggested.
