Following a complaint by the former president of AU student union Richa Singh to the University Grants Commission over the alleged lapses in the security of girl inmates staying amongst the six girl’s hostel within the premises of Women’s Hostel (WH), the UGC has instructed the varsity administration to take up the matter on high priority.
In his letter, dated December 4 (copy with TOI), the UGC has mentioned that the former president has reported the alleged lapses in security of the girl inmates staying at WH. The matter is extremely sensitive and important and providing a safe campus to the female inmates of WH should be highest priority of the varsity administration
The UGC has asked the varsity administration to take necessary action on the issue and inform the UGC and also to Singh about the steps that have been taken to resolve the issue.
However, the varsity administration has already said that the campus of WH is absolutely safe and there is no truth in what the former president is saying. The AU administration had called a meeting of the superintendents of all the six hostels of WH premises on Thursday and issued a letter stating that everything is safe on WH campus.
In fact, AU authorities had also said that Rajya Sabha MP Jaya Bachchan, who had raised the issue of alleged security lapses in the premises of WH on Wednesday, is based on false information. AU have issue a notice to Richa Singh for illegally occupying the room allotted to her at one of the hostel located within the premises of WH and have asked her to pay all the dues and vacate room 301 of Hall of Residence-I by December 8.
Commenting on the issue, AU Public Relation Officer (PRO), Chitranjan Kumar said, “AU has received the letter of UGC and would send the reply and things are safe and sound within WH and the same has been acknowledged by the superintendents of all the hostels”. Singh has been asked to vacate the room and she should abide by the notice of AU, he added.
Meanwhile, Singh has said that she will be sitting on dharna over the issue of women safety within WH and demand that there should be a high level inquiry in the entire issue as AU authorities are trying to bury the serious issue as they have done by calling a meeting of all the superintendents who have signed on varsity’s whims.
