Engg graduates can become Maths teachers after clearing TET: Govt

According to the order, “Bachelor of Engineering (B.E) of any discipline with B.Ed will be eligible to the post of B.T Assistant (Mathematics) for the purpose of employment in Public Services. The B.E graduates will be eligible to teach Mathematics from Classes 6-8”.

Considering the long pending demand of engineering graduates, the government, for the first time, made such graduates eligible to study B.Ed in 2015 but prevented them from writing Teachers Eligibility Test (TET). Initially, 20 per cent of the seats were allotted for the graduates in educational colleges but as there was no patronage, seat allotment for engineering graduates was reduced in the subsequent years.

However, engineering graduates with B.Ed degree demanded that the State government permit them to write TET and induct them in government schools. Their demand was considered in the Equivalence Committee meetings held on November 6 and 11 this year and the committee approved the resolution to permit engineering graduates, irrespective of any discipline, to become mathematics teachers.

Similarly, the equivalence committee also declared distinct courses equivalents to parent courses for the purpose of employment in public services. For instance, M.Sc Electronic Media (five years) and M.Sc Science and Technology awarded by Anna University is equivalent to M.Sc Visual Communication following which graduates of M.Sc Electronic Media and M.Sc Science and Technology will now be eligible to appear in TNPSC exams similar to graduates of MSc Visual Communication.
