Engineer’s Day in India is celebrated as tribute to the greatest Indian engineer and Bharat Ratna Sir Mokshagundam Vishweshvaraya, popularly known as Sir MV. Visvesvaraya was born on September 15, 1861, to a Telugu family at Chikkaballapur, Karnataka. His parents were well-known Sanskrit scholars. Visvesvaraya completed his primary education in his hometown and later moved to Bengaluru for higher studies. After pursuing UG degree in Arts, Visvesvaraya changed track and went for a degree in civil engineering from the College of Engineering in Pune.

- Sir MV was not only one of the greatest Indian civil engineer but also served as the 19th Diwan of Mysore, from 1912 to 1919.
- He received India’s highest honour, the Bharat Ratna, in 1955.
- He was knighted as a Knight Commander of the British Indian Empire (KCIE) by King George V for his contributions to the public good.
- Sir MV’s birthday, 15 September, is celebrated as Engineer’s Day not only in India, but also in Sri Lanka and Tanzania, in his memory.
- He was the Chief Engineer of Krishna Raja Sagara dam in the north-west suburb of Mysuru city, and also served as one of the Chief Engineers of the flood protection system for the city of Hyderabad.
- He was an expert in irrigation techniques and flood disaster management.
- Designed and constructed automatic gates patented by him at Lake Fife Storage Reservoir; introduced new system of irrigation known as “Block System”, 1903.
- M Visvesvaraya was the architect of the Krishnaraja Sagar Dam, one of the biggest dams in India.
- He was instrumental in the founding of Government Engineering College at Bangalore in 1917, one of the first engineering institutes in India. The institution was later named University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering.
