Engineers Day 2020 Top job roles for engineers today

As India celebrates Engineer’s Day today, the birth anniversary of Visvesvaraya, let’s look at how the role of an engineer has evolved over the years.

Back in the days, the role of an engineer was limited to specializations in mechanical, electrical, civil, computer science and aeronautical.

Changes brought by technology

With the emergence of technology and communication, new and diverse domains like data science, artificial intelligence, machine learning, cybersecurity, and cloud computing have entered the engineering landscape.

With companies moving rapidly towards digitization to form business strategies, the demand for engineers who are experts at new-age skills is increasing by the day.

According to a recent report by LinkedIn, Robotic Process Automation Consultant, Back-end Developer, Growth Manager, Site Reliability Engineer, Customer Success Specialist, Full Stack Engineer, Robotics Engineer (Software), Cybersecurity Specialist, Python Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist, Front-end Engineer, and Lead Generation Specialist are the top 15 emerging jobs for Indians in 2020.

Here are the top five rewarding job roles for the engineers today in the ever-changing industry:

1. Data scientist:

The role of a Data Scientist has become one of the most sought after jobs with high demand from leading IT companies and startups.

According to a survey, Indians were most interested in data scientists jobs, with an average of 31,000 online searches per month.

The responsibilities include assessing the effectiveness and accuracy of new data sources, data gathering techniques, use predictive modelling, develop custom data models, and algorithms to apply to data sets.

An entry-level data scientist earns between Rs 6,00,000-7,00,000 lakhs per annum.

2. Business analyst:

As a Business Analyst one needs to understand the business and data requirements and translate the operational requirements.

Some core skills required for this role include combining analytical and operational skills, understanding business analysis, analyse data, understanding project scope and requirements, excellent dashboarding skills, proficiency in SQL and Tableau.

An entry-level Business Analyst can expect to earn a salary ranging anywhere between 6- 8 lakhs per annum.

3. Full-stack engineer:

In order to become a full-stack developer, one must learn to interpret the requirements of the user into the overall architecture and implement it accordingly.

As a full-stack developer, one must understand the know-how of coding the server-side API, programming languages for back end development, executing the client-side of the application using JavaScript, querying databases, and version control systems as well.

An entry-level Full Stack Engineer earns around Rs. 5,00,00 – 6,00,000 lakhs per annum.

4. Machine learning engineer:

Machine Learning engineers are the backbone of consumer-facing technology companies, dealing with large volumes of data.

In order to become a machine learning engineer, you need to have a thorough understanding of data structures, algorithms and object-oriented programming.

Some of the core competencies include mining structured and unstructured data and feature engineering.

When it comes to remuneration, an entry-level Machine Learning Engineer makes around Rs. 6,00,00 – 7,00,000 lakhs per annum.

5. Cybersecurity specialist:

According to a recent study, there has been growth in cybersecurity-related jobs by 6 percent and other software development jobs by 13 percent respectively, between February-May 2020. Cybersecurity experts are in high demand as network security and data protection have become a major concern for companies in the post Covid era.

Some of the key skills they must possess include cybersecurity, Information Security, Network Security, Penetration Testing, Vulnerability Assessment.

The salary of an entry-level Cybersecurity Specialist generally starts at around Rs 8,00,000 lakhs per annum.
