LUCKNOW: The state government has drafted the common minimum syllabi which will be in sync with the New Education Policy for better employability. It will serve as the guiding principle for universities to adopt NEP from July this year. So, students enrolling in state universities from July this year will be pursuing four-year undergraduate courses. Along with the option of multiple entry and exit, that gives a student the freedom to leave a course and pursue it later, on every exit the student will leave a course after learning a new skill or practical knowledge so that he/she gets an employment opportunity.
In the four-year UG course, if a student exits in the first year then he/she will be awarded a certificate, in the second year a diploma, in third-year a three-year UG degree, and fourth year a four-year UG degree. The universities have to adopt 70% of the government’s common minimum syllabi while 30% syllabus of a course can be tailored by the universities according to their local requirement. Additional chief secretary, higher education, Monika S. Garg, said, “We have ensured that a student leaving a course after one year with a certificate should have some employability. In every course, we have weaved in the practical aspect or skill so that in case a student is not able to continue the course due to any reason, on taking an exit he/she is equipped with some skills to get a job.” For example, Garg said, a zoology student at the undergraduate level will learn aquaculture, pisciculture, or beekeeping so that if he/she exits midway they can still get a job in a related area. Garg said even in language courses, the syllabi has been drafted to make it job oriented. For example, a student pursuing English course will also be taught computer typing, translation, or dialogue writing for add on skills. “Six subjects will be compulsory in every course. These are human values and sustainable development; health; nutrition and hygiene; digital awareness; personality development; and communication skills,” Garg said. She said the government has given a structure for the implementation of NEP and universities in their board of studies, academic council and executive council will have to discuss and adopt.
