The AFCAT 2023 exam consists of two stages:
- Online test: Candidates are required to take an online test as the first stage of the examination. This test assesses candidates’ knowledge and aptitude in various areas such as verbal ability, numerical ability, reasoning, general awareness and military aptitude. Candidates applying for ground duty (technical branch) will also have to appear for the Engineering Knowledge Test (EKT) in addition to the online test.
- SSB interview: Candidates who qualify the online test will be called for the next stage, which is the SSB (Services Selection Board) interview conducted by the Air Force Selection Board (AFSB). The SSB interview evaluates candidates on their personality, intelligence and potential for becoming an officer in the Indian Air Force. It includes various tests such as psychological tests, group discussions, personal interview and physical fitness tests.
IAF conducts AFCAT twice a year in February and September. Through AFCAT eligible candidates are selected for the role of commissioned or Class 1 gazetted officer in various branches of the Indian Air Force including flying, ground duty (technical and non-technical) and meteorology.
The AFCAT serves as a gateway for both male and female candidates who aspire to join the Indian Air Force. It offers opportunities for candidates to join the Air Force as officers in permanent or short service commissions.
