IIT Kanpur hosts inaugural Judgement and Decision Making India conference

The inaugural Judgement and Decision-Making (JDM) India conference, a historic milestone in decision science, commenced at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur. The event was co-convened by Dr Arjun Ramakrishnan, a neuroscientist and decision researcher from IIT Kanpur, and convened by Dr Sumitava Mukherjee, a decision researcher, and behavioural scientist from IIT Delhi.

The JDM field delves into the science of Judgement and Decision-Making, covering fundamental cognitive and neural processes influencing decisions. Discussions spanned applied areas pivotal in various spheres of life, business, and society, encompassing diverse topics such as neuroeconomics, behavioural economics, rationality, perception of risk, artificial intelligence, and algorithmic decisions.

EMINENT KEYNOTE SPEAKERS AND ADDRESSES
Esteemed speakers included Professor Barbara Mellers from the University of Pennsylvania and Professor Arvind Sahay, Director of Management Development Institute (MDI) Gurgaon. The concluding address was delivered by Jon Baron, Emeritus Professor of Psychology at the University of Pennsylvania and Founder Editor of ‘Judgement and Decision-Making.’

Professor S Ganesh, Director of IIT Kanpur, emphasised the pivotal role of judgement and decision-making across sectors. He highlighted the conference’s importance in fostering interdisciplinary dialogue to address societal challenges in India.

INCLUSIVITY AND SPONSORSHIP

The conference aimed for inclusivity by waiving registration fees, made possible by generous sponsorships from Aerobe Pvt Ltd, TA Pai Institute of Management, Manipal, and Trident Technologies. It featured contributions from researchers at various career stages, emphasising undergraduate research and a dedicated panel for PhD candidates.

INTERNATIONAL ENGAGEMENT AND FUTURE PROSPECTS

Dr Arjun Ramakrishnan highlighted the international appeal of the conference, attracting participants from countries including the US, Canada, China, Israel, and Italy. The organisers envision such initiatives fostering the growth of Judgement and Decision-Making in India.

Attendees’ enthusiastic response led to plans for annual conferences, announced during the event. Furthermore, discussions were initiated on forming an academic association dedicated to Judgement and Decision-Making in India, showcasing the conference’s impact and potential for future collaborations.
