The new pattern will encourage non-Science students with Math to apply for BPlanning programme
The National Testing Agency (NTA) has introduced a few changes in the exam pattern of JEE Main 2020. The paper for BArch and BPlanning aspirants will have separate question papers to evaluate their skills.
“Earlier, BArch/BPlanning aspirants had to appear for a common test comprising Math (25 questions), Aptitude Test (50 questions) and Drawing Test. From 2020 onwards, students have the option to take Paper-II and apply for BPlanning without appearing for the Drawing test. Instead, they can appear for a Planning-based MCQ test (25 questions) and forego the Drawing test altogether,” says Vineet Joshi, director general, NTA, while talking to Education Times.
Sample question papers for the recently-introduced BPlanning section of Paper-II will soon be released by JEE and NTA on its official website soon.
Students will have the flexibility to appear for separate exams for BTech, BArch or BPlanning courses. But, BPlan aspirants wanting to appear for BArch will have to appear for Math, Aptitude test, Drawing test and also the separate BPlanning section where questions will be based on rural and urban planning.

Why the recent inclusion
The School of Planning & Architecture (SPA), Delhi, and Institute of Town Planners India gave the inputs to make changes in the exam pattern. The new pattern will encourage non-Science students with Math to apply for BPlanning programme without going through the Drawing test.
“While earlier, Math (in class XII) was the only compulsory eligibility criteria for admission to BArch/BPlanning programmes, the Council of Architecture (CoA) in 2018 made it mandatory for BArch students to have Physics, Chemistry and Math in class XII,” says Poonam Prakash, professor and head, department of Physical Planning, SPA, Delhi.
“Students enrolling for BPlanning can come from a social science stream as long as they have Math. We wanted aspirants in the field to be evaluated for their sensitivity towards urban development issues along with their comprehension, analytical and critical thinking skills. Hence, the separate section for BPlanning in Paper-II,” adds Prakash.
While BArch is a 5-year programme and trains students to work in the built environment at the scale of individual buildings, BPlanning is a 4-year programme which is more multidisciplinary in nature involving urban planning in cities, neighbourhoods and planning of economics and law.
With 50% of India’s population in India expected to get urbanised in the next couple of decades, the need for students specialising in urban planning has become all the more important.
