Academic pressure, among other factors, has led to a rise in the number of students, diagnosed with depression in colleges across the country. Post the Rohith Vemula suicide, (PhD student at University of Hyderabad, who hung himself to death in January 2016) universities have started special initiatives, to help students battling depression, said R Subrahmanyam, secretary, higher education, Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) via video conference, at the inaugural function of Equity- achievements and challenges in India, a national level conference organised by National Project Implementation Unit and State Project Implementation Unit (SPIU) in association with College of Engineering Pune (COEP) campus on Friday
Saurabh Vijay, Maharashtra state secretary, higher and technical education department; Abhay Wagh, director, directorate of technical education, Maharashtra; Prakash Khodke, central project advisor, National Project Implementation Unit and Francisco Marmolejo, lead tertiary education specialist, World Bank were the chief guests for the event.
Marmolejo said, “The youth of today, is the future of tomorrow. In order to see a change in our society, we need to invest in the education of the young minds of our country.”
Various engineering projects completed by students from different colleges across the state will be exhibited at the two-day conference. Sessions on various topics such as social and gender equality, and gender issues among others, will take place during the conference.
