Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports had allotted four Centres of Excellence in sports to Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) in the specialties of Athletics, Fencing, Cycling, and Swimming, informed GNDU vice chancellor Prof Jaspal Singh Sandhu while talking to media persons here on Thursday.
Sandhu informed that the Centres would be fully funded by Centre government that would identify young and talented sportspersons from a age group from 10-12 years.
They would be provided training in the selected sports and when they would grow they would join the university for higher education.

“Their diet and fee for schooling will be met by the ministry. For purpose of the stay the ministry has also allotted two 200 bedded sports hostels one each for boys and girls “ said he.
A coach would be provided for every ten athletes of any speciality while a supervisor would coordinate the activities of these centres.

Sandu said GNDU was the only university to have been provided with such a large number of Centres of Excellence.
He informed that ministry had also allotted synthetic track for the athletic events, the grant for which would be released shortly. The grant had also been provided for the up-gradation of the cycling velodrome .
He informed that the ministry had also sought a detailed project report from GNDU for making its swimming pool suitable for all-season by covering it and providing heating in the winter months.
