Minister of state (MoS) for external affairs V Muraleedharan underscored the need for vibrant multi-disciplinary institutions of high quality that increase capacity of higher education in India and ensure equitable access. It is justifiable to introduce liberal education at the undergraduate level for preparing students for future employment scenarios and professional roles, Muraleedharan, also MoS for parliamentary affairs, said.
Echoing this thought delivering the 38th convocation address of Mangalore University on Thursday, he said, “Simply tailoring people into jobs that exist today, but that are likely to change or disappear after some years, is suboptimal and even counterproductive. As we do all this, we will seek to combine wisdom of the ancients with the challenges of modern times, such that the ancient wisdom will make possible a more ethical and happier world.”
Referring to new education policy 2019 that is in draft stage now, Muraleedharan said it makes earnest attempt to seek relevance as cardinal value for our education system. It provides for multiple exit and entry options for students, starting with secondary education stage and going all the way up to undergraduate and postgraduate education and research and this liberal education system at UG level will prepare students for future, he said.

Citing Swami Vivekananda’s view of relevance of education, Muraleedharan said students must be able to concretise their learning experiences, engage in reflective observation, be capable of abstract conceptualisation, and resort to active experimentation in an atmosphere of imagination, creativity and innovation. “Youth, holding brilliant promise of demographic dividend, must acquire domain-specific application-oriented knowledge,” he noted.
There is need to make India’s education system relevant by re-inventing it in line with its ancient knowledge. Ancient Indians paid utmost attention to making education system relevant to their times. “Every one of the 64 ‘vidyas’ taught at Takshashila was useful to society. Today, we need to make our education system relevant to our times by re-inventing it in line with our ancient knowledge and our current priorities and challenges,” he said.
P Subrahmanya Yadapadithaya, vice-chancellor, Mangalore University conferred DLitt (honoris causa) on K C Naik, realtor-educationist, DLitts in sociology to two scholars and other degrees, rank certificate including PhDs to 6575 graduates who received it in person. A M Khan, registrar presented a brief report on the achievements of the university, outlining the steps taken to raise the standing of this university along with plans for the future. V Ravindrachary, registrar (evaluation) was present.
